In un grattacielo un malvivente mina un ascensore perché vuole molti milioni di dollari per salvare coloro che l'ascensore trasporta. L'agente speciale Jack Traven e il collega Harry, esperto di esplosivi, intervengono e riescono a sventare il piano criminale. Irritato per l'insuccesso e per il premio conferito a Jack ed Harry, il malvivente mette una bomba su un autobus pubblico: il mezzo, superando le 50 miglia orarie, innesca un ordigno che esploderà, qualora l'autobus marciasse a velocità inferiore. Jack, avvertito dal folle, riesce a salire sull'automezzo che viene dirottato su un autostrada in costruzione, dopo che è stato consentito all'autista, ferito da un terrorista presente a bordo per caso, di essere trasbordato. Alla guida si pone una donna, Annie, che ha avuto dei guai per eccesso di velocità ma ora deve mettere a frutto tutte le sue qualità di pilota, soprattutto per superare una paurosa interruzione stradale.
