Nel 1984 "Ottobre Rosso", il più sofisticato sottomarino atomico dell'Urss, parte per una missione di cui gli americani non riescono a decifrare il significato. Finché l'agente della CIA Jack Ryan intuisce che il comandante Ramius intende disertare e consegnare il sommergibile agli americani. Anche i sovietici hanno però intuito il progetto e si mettono quindi sulle tracce di "Ottobre Rosso" per distruggerlo.
